This document summarizes the scientific evidence on the negative health effects of physical inactivity and on the benefits provided by moderate levels of physical activity, especially walking and cycling. It highlights the interaction between strategies for health promotion and the role of transport and land-use policy in providing environmental conditions that can facilitate and enable people deciding to walk and cycle for transport.
