Injury-free running - a utopia? (2016)

risk factors of running-related injuries in men and women

Running is a popular sport worldwide and has a positive effect on health and well-being. However, the numbers of running-related injuries and the associated costs are high. Van der Worp performed a systematic review to examine which factors increase the risk of running injuries, and whether this is the same for men and women. He also measured women participating in the Marikenloop Run (5 or 10 km) and investigated which factors (personal, environmental and training) are related to getting injured in this group of women. He found that a previous injury and too much training increase the risk of running-related injuries. This information can be used in injury prevention by providing targeted advice and exercises combined with individual running advice. Furthermore, Van der Worp examined the evidence underlying the management of runners‘ knee (Iliotibial Band Syndrome; ITBS) and concluded that much has been written on this topic but at a weak level of evidence, especially concerning diagnosis and treatment.
