Spatial planning implications of cities' sports policies (2014)

Auteur(s): Arnout Zaal

With the bid for Olympic host cities around the world, spatial planning is involved with sport ambitions more often than before. Contemporary articles and authors involved with the relation of sport and cities tend to argue for specific solutions a city can find in adopting a sport policy for the issues it is facing. A leading discourse in this field of research is the expectation that sport can be a means, other than being a goal in itself. While various previous articles elaborate on the usage of sports policy to tackle specific problems, the diversity is large as there are many issues a city can be dealing with. There are three main concepts filtered out of contemporary literature and presented in a theoretical framework. The thesis aims to encompass the three main theoretical concepts into two case studies in the Netherlands. The research clarifies the relation between spatial planning and a city’s sports policy. The impact a city’s sport policy on spatial planning is investigated without a focus on a single theoretical concept and therefore exceeds previous research’s focus to an extent that it fills a gap in literature.
