The prevention of violence in sport (2003)

A series of tragic events scarred the European conscience in the 20th century: flaring violence, spectacular tragedies and disasters. We all remember the Heysel stadium tragedy and other serious incidents that took place at European or world sports events. Since the beginning of the 80s, the Council of Europe has been trying to find a common and concerted preventive response at international level to fight against violence associated with sports events, in particular football. This publication gives you an overview of the recommendations of the council of Europe on violence in sport, describes very concretely in a handbook how we can respond to this problem in a concerted, preventive way (numerous initiatives and preventive measures, experiments in progress which have already shown a certain degree of effectiveness) and finally informs us of the major role that local authorities are encouraged to play in developing youth projects for preventing violence.
