This research is part of the Zoneparc pilot project on behalf of Nike and Stichting Zoneparc Foundation Nederland. Zoneparc is a playground improvement project developed by Nike, the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and the Youth Sport Trust in England. By introducing innovative playtime activities and playground management systems Zoneparc aims to counteract many of the social and behavioural problems encountered by young people during school break times and offers opportunities to enjoy break time. The central question evaluated here is: Are changes observed among the bully environment of children and their feelings of insecurity in school after the introduction of Zoneparc? Two primary schools, 579 pupils and 82 staff members, were included in the study. The variables were measured at both schools 4 months before, and 5 months after the introduction of the playground improvement. Questionnaires using Likert-scale were administered and (group) interviews were held. In general this paper argues that in spite of some differing results, Zoneparc helps to decrease a bully environment, pupil’s feelings of insecurity on the playground, and increases the amount of enjoyment they experience from being at school and the playground, especially for girls and younger pupils.
