Contemporary society and the growth of leisure (1978)

Auteur(s): Kenneth Roberts

This book challenges the preoccupation with activities and facilities usually associated with research into recreation. Contemporary leisure is the product of industrialism and should not, therefore, be viewed in isolation. Rather, maintains the author, it can be fully understood only when seen in an wider social context. From this sociological perspective the book systematically examines the impact of leisure on education, the family, youth culture and working life. A provocative concluding chapter considers public policy and provision. The book will be of interest not only to sociologists, but also to leisure practitioners and others concerned with the quality of contemporary life.
