Emotional influence in sport teams (2013)

the impact of coach's emotions on players' motivation and performance

Auteur(s): A.J. Pater

This research looked at the effects of emotional displays by coaches on motivation and performance of his players (team). Taken into account, emotional contagion, player’s own emotions, interpretation, appropriateness and epistemic motivation. 30 soccer teams participated. The correlation and regression analyses showed that (1) coach’s (especially positive) emotions are transferred to his team, (2) a player’s positive emotions influence motivation and performance, (3) a player used to coach’s emotions to interpret whether their performance was substantial, (4) the influence of the coach’s emotions depended on how appropriate the players rated the coach’s emotional expression and (5) a player’s epistemic motivation did not seem to have an influence. Overall coach’s emotions had an impact on player’s own emotions, motivation and performance.
