What lessons can be learned from tobacco control for combating the growing prevalence of obesity?

Auteur(s): Robert West

Tobacco smoking kills more people than almost any other avoidable cause, but in the UK this situation is improving and has been for about 35 years. While smoking remains one of the leading avoidable causes of premature death in the UK, it may seem odd to seek to draw lessons for another behavioural condition that for the time being at least kills fewer people – obesity. However, lessons can probably be learned from both the similarities between the two areas and their differences.
