Sociology and leisure research
Sociologists of leisure are notoriously marginal creatures. Complaints of lacking recognition within their own discipline are legion, and within the inter-disciplinary field of leisure studies their contribution has been marginal. This document argues for a better deal; that the time is ripe for the sociology of leisure to adopt a strident posture, to stake its claims both as an entirely proper sociological specialism, and as a foundation discipline for future leisure research. Leisure studies in general and the leisure industries will benefit from a stronger sociological input.
