Non work time (1978)

Non-participation is a problem for planners and researchers; far easer to find and question a sports centre user than someone who makes a conscious decision to stay at home. To find out who the non users are, why they do not use a specified facility and what they do instead is a new problem for researchers; there is now a wealth of information concerning the leisure industry and public provision for recreation, but a broader base is needed to derive a picture of the non-user. This literature review sets out to provide a varied background for planners and researchers interested in developing a more holistic view of the people they are dealing with. Thus it covers some ground apparently not directly connected with recreation research and planning in the narrow sense; for instance, it includes publications on the sociology of work and the media, and also touches on some sociological theory. However, if the best use is to be made of facilities, leisure or non work should not be seperated form the rest of life.
