Step Up! Tackling the burden of insufficient physical activity in Europe (2023)

Nederlandstalige samenvatting:

Engelse samenvatting:
Being physically active helps prevent a range of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, and improves mental health and cognitive functioning, among other benefits.  Too many Europeans are physically inactive. One in three European adults do not meet the WHO physical activity guidelines, and almost half never exercise or play sport.

The report describes patterns and trends of insufficient physical activity in Europe. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimated that increasing physical activity among Europeans could save EU countries €8 billion annually. They also found that increasing physical activity could prevent thousands of premature deaths.

The report provides a range of policy options to increase physical activity levels: setting-specific programmes in schools, workplaces and the health-care system; policies to increase access to sports facilities; urban design, environment and transport policies; communication and information policies.
